Our two previous joint concerts have been a feast of choral entertainment.

Cantamus Chamber Choir with the Nick Malcolm Jazz Quintet and the Eberle String Quartet

A very exciting concert for this autumn. Will Todd's Mass in Blue has been wowing audiences around the world with a setting of the mass with an infectious mix of jazz and blues.

Soprano Lorna James (pictured below) has just been confirmed as soloist for this concert on the strength of a performance in Warwick recently. She is a rising star in the world of opera having performed with Opera North but showed a fabulous versatility gliding effortlessly above the choir and orchestra around Will Todd's wonderfully idiomatic writing.

The rest of the concert will feature the Nick Malcolm Jazz Quintet - the most exciting of Bristol's jazz musicians - performing their own work and Themes from French Cinema by Dominic Alldis with Simon Marsh on soprano and tenor saxophone plus the Eberle String Quartet. Expect high quality jazz and beautiful arrangements.

Iain will be playing 4 Themes from French Cinema, arranged by Dominic Aldiss including Autumn Leaves, Dance with Me, under Paris skies and What's the weather like in Paris. Radiant choral music to lift the soul Our Spring concert features French, English and Scottish choral music to lift the soul. Faure’s beautiful Requiem will include soloists Melanie Page and Simon Young accompanied by organist Steven Hollas. The programme will also include Durufle's motets based on Gregorian Chants, two mesmerising pieces by Scottish composer James Macmillan; A New Dawn and O Radiant Dawn and a new setting of Come Sleep by Daniel Brinsmead, which won the Abbey Road new Anthem competition and was recorded by the Eric Whitacre Singers.

Salisbury Vespers & Requiem in Blue

Bath Abbey, Bath

Come and listen to us in the splendid surroundings of Bath Abbey in an ambitious concert in collaboration with St. Laurence School, Bath Camerata, Nigel Perrin and a brass group selected from local professionals and gifted youngsters from Wiltshire.

Salisbury Vespers by Bob Chilcott will be performed by 5 choirs, brass ensemble led by Mike Daniels, percussion and organist Marcus Sealy conducted by ex King's Singer Nigel Perrin.

Harvey Brough's Requiem in Blue was performed by us in the Wiltshire Music Centre in a memorable concert nearly ten years ago. It features an infectious mix of folk, jazz and traditional choral writing by Harvey Brough of 'Harvey and Wall Bangers' fame.

An evening of music, seasonal readings and carols to warm the heart and soul, mulled wine and mince pies should warm the rest! Bach, Handel, Rutter and Christmas favourites including carols for all to sing.

Equally exquisite is his motet O Jesu Christ, mein's Lebens Licht, a serene chorus with sumptuous instrumental accompaniment. The inspired final 4 part chorale in Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen expresses joy in redemption and this gorgeous programme concludes with Handel's Chandos Anthem O Praise the Lord. An evening to lift the soul.

Kodaly's amazing Missa Brevis accompanied on organ by Steven Hollas Brahms' gorgeous How lovely is thy dwelling place from his Requiem John Rutter, Childhood Lyrics to lighten the mood.

Also Bella Finch's Trinity Choir will be presenting a selection of songs which will be fabulously prepared and beautifully performed.

Cantamus joins forces with St. Laurence School and several primary schools for two performances of Zimbe.

This exciting setting of traditional african and gospel songs will be accompanied by the extraordinarily talented Jason Rebello on piano and the composer Alexander L'Estrange on bass with Rob Brian on drums and local saxophone player Kevin Poplett.

An exhilarating evening it will be.

‘Sing a Merry Madrigal’

George Shearing: Songs and Sonnets Adam’s Apple: Hymns for jazz trio and some Bard related quartet pieces with trumpet John Rutter: Birthday Madrigals

In their deliciously attractive and varied programme, Cantamus Chamber Choir collaborate with Adam’s Apple in two masterfully arranged collections of Shakespeare sonnets and madrigals with a subtly cultured jazz twist. Shearing’s inimitable style shines through in Songs and Sonnets with a rollicking Hey, ho the wind and the rain, and it was for his 75th birthday that Rutter composed the Birthday Madrigals including a gorgeous Draw on, Sweet Night. Adam’s Apple take traditional hymns and transform them into modern Jazz pieces...‘Like to the lark...sings hymns at heaven's gate’. An English feast to rekindle the memory of spring!

Conductors Mike Daniels and Richard Gabe both take up the baton joined by a brass quintet led by trumpeter Mike Daniels.

Cantamus will also be singing Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre.

We're looking forward to the next concert on 12 May where hope springs eternal with Chilcott, MacDowall and Bernstein. See the listing for more info. Summertime 2024 brings another collaboration with GBH Big Band and WMC Chorus in a collection of songs made famous by Sinatra - Perfectly Frank - don't miss it on the 16 June. 

Upcoming events in the autumn include Mike's twenty five year anniversary in the WMC  and our Christmas concert on Tuesday 17 December. More details nearer the time.
